Would like to ask some advice on carrying a spare paddle while river running / playboating.

Is this something that should be carried every time, like floatation and a throwbag?

And what are the storage options (for a 4 piece breakdown model or a telescoping cheap single blade paddle), with the limited space in modern playboats?

Best rule of thumb for spare paddle is," are you too far away from your car to walk back?"

I know a lot fewer folks who carry a spare than ones who do (on local runs). A common compromise is to stow a set of hand paddles. That's what I've decided to do, but that also means I need to practice with them on a fairly regular basis.

Thanks for the hand paddle comment. Had not thought of that, sounds like a great compromise.

In my small Kingpin a spare paddle isn't an option. I carry hand paddles, and pray I don't have to use them. Shoulders will be sore the next day if you do.
